Yasuda Real Estate Co., Ltd., a long-standing owner of real estate in the Nihonbashi Hamacho area, has embarked on a mission to revitalize the neighborhood. Their vision goes beyond mere physical development, aiming to create a vibrant community centered around the concepts of "greenery and craftsmanship." To attract residents, workers, and visitors alike, they have transformed a prime site into a unique hotel.
The Hamacho Hotel, designed by Uds Ltd. and The Range Design Inc., serves as the nucleus of this ongoing effort. It stands out with its bold visual expressions of "greenery and craftsmanship," making it a social hub for locals and a destination for travelers seeking a new cultural experience.
What sets the Hamacho Hotel apart is its commitment to incorporating nature and traditional craftsmanship into its design. The building's facade showcases a three-dimensional vertical landscape, created by stacking volumes of greenery. This not only adds aesthetic value to the streetscape but also contributes to energy reduction efforts, aligning with the essential concept of Hamacho.
The architects employed board-formed concrete and plastering techniques to highlight the craftsmanship aspect of the design. The result is an articulated facade that beautifully integrates with the surrounding environment. Additionally, the building's height of 45 meters allows the concept of Hamacho to be visually represented from the ground up.
The Hamacho Hotel features 170 keys spread across 15 floors, including a basement level. The ground floor serves as a common area open to the public, housing a hotel restaurant and a shop. The guestroom floors (2-14) provide comfortable accommodations, while the 15th floor offers four executive rooms, each with a private balcony.
To support the weight of the extensive landscaping, a lightweight artificial soil was used. This innovative solution not only stabilizes the size of the plants' roots but also contributes to the building's long-term sustainability.
Construction of the Hamacho Hotel took place from September 2016 to January 2019 in the Nihonbashi Hamacho area of Tokyo, Japan. The project was a collaborative effort involving Yasuda Real Estate Co., Ltd., Uds Ltd., The Range Design Inc., MHS Planners, Architects & Engineers Ltd., solso (landscape design), sola associates (lighting design), Teruhiro Yanagihara (Tokyo Craft Room interior designer), and A.N.D. + Nomura Co., Ltd. (restaurant interior designer).
The Hamacho Hotel has received recognition for its outstanding design. In 2020, it was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building, and Structure Design category. This prestigious accolade is bestowed upon designs that exhibit creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life.
With its fusion of greenery and craftsmanship, the Hamacho Hotel stands as a testament to the power of design to transform spaces and create meaningful experiences. It not only revitalizes the Hamacho area but also offers a unique cultural journey for guests from around the world.
